Substitute is a Normal-type status move with no power and perfect accuracy. When used, the user sacrifices 25% of its maximum HP to create a decoy, or "substitute," that takes damage in place of the user. This substitute absorbs hits and status effects, allowing the user to avoid certain detrimental conditions and attacks. The substitute will disappear once it has taken damage equal to the HP sacrificed to create it.
Substitute is often used in competitive play to protect the user from status conditions like paralysis, poison, and sleep, as well as to set up for other strategies such as boosting stats or using non-damaging moves without immediate risk. It's a versatile move available to a wide range of Pokémon and often plays a key role in tactical play.
