TM171 (Toxic Spikes) is a Technical Machine (TM) in the Pokémon series that teaches the move "Toxic Spikes" to a compatible Pokémon. Toxic Spikes is a status move that scatters spikes on the opponent's side of the field. When an opposing Pokémon switches in, it becomes poisoned. If Toxic Spikes is used twice, the spikes will badly poison opposing Pokémon instead. Toxic Spikes does not affect Flying-type, Steel-type, or Poison-type Pokémon, nor does it affect Pokémon with the Levitate ability. Furthermore, Poison-type Pokémon will absorb the Toxic Spikes upon switching in, removing the spikes from the field.
