TM01 (Technical Machine 01) is an item in the Pokémon series used to teach Pokémon a specific move, varying by game generation. In the game's earliest generation, Generation I, TM01 teaches the move Mega Punch, a Normal-type move with a power of 80, accuracy of 85%, and 20 PP (Power Points). Mega Punch is known for its substantial power but less-than-perfect accuracy.
In Generation II, TM01 was changed to teach DynamicPunch, a Fighting-type move with a power of 100, accuracy of 50%, and 5 PP. DynamicPunch also confuses the target if it hits, giving it a unique strategic advantage despite its low accuracy.
Starting from Generation V, the TM system was overhauled to allow infinite usage of TMs as opposed to being a one-time-use item. This change made TM01 more versatile and reusable for strategic planning in a player's team setup.
Over various generations, TM01 has taught different moves:
Teaches Focus Punch to a compatible Pokémon.
Short Effect: Teaches Hone Claws to a compatible Pokémon. (Gen IV & III: Focus Punch Gen II: DynamicPunch Gen I: Mega Punch)
