Air Balloon is a held item introduced in Generation V of the Pokémon series. Its primary effect is to make the holder immune to Ground-type moves as long as the balloon remains intact. This immunity can be crucial in battles, especially for Pokémon that typically have a Ground-type weakness, such as Electric-type Pokémon.
When a Pokémon holding an Air Balloon is hit by a damaging move, the balloon bursts, and the Pokémon loses its Ground-type immunity. Notably, status moves, like Toxic or Thunder Wave, do not pop the balloon. However, indirect damage, such as from Stealth Rock, Spikes, or Hail, will cause the balloon to burst as well. The item is occasionally used to temporarily give Ground immunity to Pokémon that would greatly benefit from it until they can execute their strategy or force a switch.
